‘So, what is the nativity?’

Here is a silly sketch I wrote a few years ago when I was a youth and children’s worker for a church. The Crib Service was creeping up so I decided to retell the Nativity story through two friends (one slightly ditzy) having a conversation. The sketch is split into three parts as the custom in the church was to reveal the figures and build  the nativity scene at different stages of the service. However, singing a carol in between the gaps will work as well.

When Vanessa (the curate) and I performed it, we were hidden away so the voices just boomed out of the speakers. This seemed to work really well as everyone focussed on the nativity, and we didn’t have to learn the words. It’s all a bit of fun and hopefully shares the true meaning of Christmas in a dramatic way.

If you’re thinking about at spicing up your family Christmas services this year, and I don’t mean serving mulled wine (although how great would that be!), here are a few clips from YouTube that retell the nativity story all with a visual edge to them - enjoy…

"This is without doubt the best collection of children’s advent and Christmas resources that I have come across." - thegoodbookstall.org.uk

This worship idea is a reflection based on Psalm 46 - "Be still and know that I am God."

It was first presented at the Next Generation conference in October 2011. You can use this video file or Powerpoint presentation to try it yourself.

On Saturday 15th October, over 250 youth and children's leaders and volunteers attended 'The Next Generation' conference in Wells. Find out why people called it "amazing"...
