2011 National Society Celebrations

Posted by  Katy Staples

On the 14th October 30 children and adults from Ashton Keynes Church of England Primary School made the long coach trip to London as part of their prize for winning the Diocese of Bristol banner competition.

They were in London to attend the 200 yr. anniversary of the National Society held at Westminster Abbey and attended by schools, DBE representatives, Bishops and dignitaries from across England and Wales.

The banner was designed by Becky Wilkins now in year 5 and as part of the prize Becky, along with a friend, was able to carry the banner in the procession at the start and end of the service, watched by the assembled throng, her classmates and a very proud dad.

The pupils were very excited to be sitting just opposite where ‘Kate’ had stood prior to walking up the aisle to meet Andrew – the royal wedding being perfectly timed to allow the pupils to feel a real connection to the Abbey.

Canon DR Ann Holt, chair of DBE and Jackie Waters-Dewhurst DDE attended with the school. Thanks must go to Kathryn Nicholls head teacher and her staff for all their hard work in getting the pupils to London and to the pupils themselves for their exemplary behaviour.
